Do you have an older bathroom extractor fan that is so noisy it wakes you up when someone uses it at night? This is not an uncommon scenario, and occurs because either the fan design is not modern, or dust has accumulated in it so much over the years that the fan blade catches making excess noise. This occurs because not many of us take time to clean it once a week as we should do. Not only that it is dangerous as the fan can overheat if it is working harder than it was designed for.
Modern bathroom fans have silent power designs and a wide range of sizes to suit anything from a small under stairs toilet, through to a large heavily used family bathroom.
If you have not got a bathroom extractor fan fitted at all then you really should do as they easily remove excess humidity arising from hot baths or showers, as well as removing unpleasant toilet smells.
You can get ones that come on automatically when movement is sensed, which is actually very useful in a workplace toilet. Or the traditional ones that either have a separate pull cord to turn them on, or ones that are wired in to come on at the same time a light is turned on.
Bathroom extractor fans can now be bought for very reasonable prices, even the very modern silent running ones. You would be well advised to take advice when buying a fan to make sure that is of a suitable size for the use you have planned for it. Basically a fan is not just a fan, it is designed to handle a specific square volume of space. Get this wrong and it will not be up to the job, so ask the dealer to make sure you get the right one.
Just note that all electrical work will need to be carried out by an electrician who is qualified to “Part P” of the IEE regulations. You would also be well advised to have them install a Residual Current Device (RCD) install on the circuit with the extractor fan in it, as this will prevent any electric shock as a result of moisture inadvertently getting in the closed electrical parts of the fan.
You can no longer do such electrical work yourself, however many people do this without realising that they do now need to use an electrician qualified to “Part P”, and not all electricians are qualified to this standard.
You should replace your extractor fan if yours is performing poorly or not doing the job correctly. Chances are your extractor fan could be wasting you money too if it's inefficient.
