The extractor grill does not have to be in the same area as the fan, a simple comment but it is a true statement. In many cases the user considers it essential that the extractor fan and grill are all in the same position and there are many times when that is a suitable or even the best solution. Probably one of the main considerations is whether the installation is in a residence or in a place of work. In a residence the appearance can become of paramount importance whereas in the workplace good working practice and cost of installation may be more important. Certainly where the extraction can be straight through the wall then it is a major consideration.
The extractor fan and grill can however be quite large and it is worth considering placing the fan in an area away from the extraction point and connecting to the extraction point by suitable ducting. The typical ducting for an extraction fan is usually only some 4 inches (100 mm) in diameter so this can easily be taken above or below floor level to the required point. The extraction grill then is only required to fit the size of the duct and not the size of the motor and controller, that is to say a 4 inch (100 mm) exit hole with a small surround.
There are a number different surrounds that can be chosen and these can be small square plastic types which are very functional and quite effective and are exceedingly cheap but it is now possible to purchase chrome circular grills with the grills also being circular in design. These are more expensive but still very low in cost and do look very good, the circular grill is also likely to cause less resistance to gas extraction as the gases are being pulled into a circular pipe. They are particularly effective when there are several extraction points in different rooms. This may be in a simple residential application where 2 bathrooms and a central kitchen extractor fan may be required or in a commercial B & B or hotel application where multiple points are required.
Consider where the extraction point or points in the room are going to be placed and make sure that they are in the most effective place. The ceiling or high in the wall is generally the most effective place and in this instance looks are perhaps not too important but impressions in décor still leaving lasting impressions so it is worth getting right.
