There are many multi meters available to the skilled electrical engineer for use in his normal job but the requirement for accurate testing equipment has never been more important than at the present time. The 17th edition regulations was a culmination of a complete tightening of the work carried out on electrical circuits and in particular their ability to function correctly. Now on every job of work the electrical circuit has to be tested to see if it is fit for purpose both before and after the work has been carried out. This is particularly important as the service provider must certificate the work at the appropriate stages.
It is therefore particularly useful to see the development of the 17th edition multi-function tester which has been developed solely to meet the latest requirements. It is a hand held piece of equipment, battery operated which meets all the safety regulations required. It must be used by a skilled electrical engineer and will not only perform a complete set of tests but those tests are recorded and can be fed into a computer and they can be printed to provide official certification of the circuit concerned.
The multi-function test meter is first used for a circuit continuity check and it has an auto null facility to zero out lead resistance. The circuit must be isolated for this test. One major facility for this meter is the feature that it can check the RCD (Residual current device) circuit loop impedance without tripping any kind of RCBD. The meter can check the RCD itself for a complete set of trip times (a total of 6 different levels) and the trip currents. The ever increasing importance placed on the RCD to save lives makes this an easy but very important part of the testing procedure. RCD usage is likely to become ever more important and will most likely, in due time, form a major part of all work on household system. The importance of checking a system blind is rectified to a large extent by the insulation check which can be carried out at a number of voltages up to 500 volts.
The equipment will check the RCD in the meters auto mode without going back to the tester and it can carry out the rest of the typical circuit checks.
The multi-function test meter is geared so that it you can download all the results of the tests to a computer by the installation of specialist software and it will print all the BS 7671, BS5839, NICIEC and NAPIT certificates.
